Wilson in 1984*, which suggests that ‘Humans have an innate affinity for nature deeply embedded in our DNA. It is not merely psychological, but biological. Disconnection from nature has real consequences on our emotional and mental wellbeing.’ Our vision is to foster this vital connection between ‘people – nature – living creatures’ to mitigate the effects of Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD) in modern cities.”
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the minimum green space per person in urban areas should be 9 square metres, with the ideal target being 50 square metres per person. These green spaces must be accessible for public recreation and activity. It is also recommended that urban neighborhoods should offer walkable green spaces in every 300 – 500 metres. This principle is already being adopted worldwide, such as Singapore’s Nature Ways initiative, which integrates tree and shrub-lined roads to lower temperatures, reduce pollution, and create biodiversity corridors. Under this initiative, Singapore is currently ranked 2nd on Treepedia’s Green View Index, a global benchmark for urban greenery.
Ms. La-ead added “We have applied case studies under the Biophilia concept that affect work performance. A Harvard University study, among other credible studies, found that occupants of LEED-certified buildings, with natural materials and views of green space, showed increased cognitive performance, enhanced problem-solving, and improved decision-making. We have utilised conclusions from these studies to expand green space boundaries into our project so that residents, hotel guests, shoppers, and corporate employees can access and experience nature whenever desired, reducing stress from work and lifestyle. Together with leading expert designers, we have integrated the principle of ‘Biophilic Design’ with the mixed-use development through elements that mimic natural shapes, patterns, and textures, including green landscapes, natural materials, and water features, to create relaxing atmospheres and help control area temperature through natural cooling, which is particularly important in Bangkok’s hot climate. These elements enhance all 5 sensory experiences tangibly, allowing visitors to feel deeply connected with nature even in the city centre.”
In line with this vision, Dusit Central Park proudly introduces Thailand’s Largest Urban Roof Park, a 7-rai (11,200 square metres) green oasis that offers an extended park view and feelings of a natural hillscape that merges visually with Lumpini Park. This is the first and only location in Bangkok where visitors can experience a visually seamless and panoramic view of both Roof Park and Lumpini Park in perfect harmony. The landscape has been designed using ecosystem principles, which encourage interaction between flora, fauna, microbes, water, soil, and air to support planetary balance. Through careful selection of 100% authentic Thai flora that helps capturing dust while attracting beneficial insects and small animals, including waterfall creations, this space can sustainably enhance surrounding environmental quality through air quality improvement, temperature reduction, and mitigation of Urban Heat Island Effect through rainwater absorption and storage. We also implement sustainability technologies including HVAC Optimisation systems and lighting control with MEP automatic detection system to adjust according to internal building environments and external conditions. We also have solar roof systems as well as water management and water treatment systems that treat wastewater within the project for reuse.
